POKOTABI / Aoyagi Kashiten
青柳菓子店
Discover the everyday appeal of Japanese confections at Aoyagi Kashiten in Shakujiidai, Nerima Ward, from strawberry and Shine Muscat daifuku to classic mitarashi dango and mame daifuku.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Looking through the glass counter reveals an inviting assortment of rice cakes and seasonal fruit daifuku. At Aoyagi Kashiten, a good starting point is the fruit-filled daifuku, where soft mochi and modestly sweetened bean paste highlight the fresh fruit inside. From winter into spring, strawberry daifuku strikes a refreshing balance between chewy rice cake and the juicy acidity of fresh berries. Come early autumn, items such as Shine Muscat daifuku, pairing sweet white bean paste with crisp grape juice, as well as blueberry versions, bring seasonal variety to the shelves.
The roster of everyday classics is just as dependable. Mitarashi dango arrives with a light, bouncy chew, coated in an addictive sweet soy glaze that leans savory rather than cloying. Alongside rustic mame daifuku studded with beans, there are uguisu mochi dusted with fine green soybean flour in early spring, aromatic mugwort-scented kashiwa mochi, and sakura mochi, marking each turn of the calendar. The shop also prepares ohagi with choices of both coarse and smooth red bean paste, showing thoughtful attention to individual tastes.
Because these freshly made confections contain no unnecessary additives, they are best enjoyed on the day of purchase while the texture is at its softest. Situated in the residential neighborhood of Shakujiidai in Nerima Ward, the shop stays open until 19:30 on all days except Thursdays. It makes a comfortable stop during an afternoon walk or on the way home to pick up a sweet to accompany tea.
